Sepharad

Sepharad

From Sepharad to the New World – from the Shtetl to the Pampas:

After the Reconquista (Reconquest) of the Iberian Peninsula, many Jews converted to Catholicism, albeit it for the most part, involuntarily. Nevertheless, they continued to face increasing legal and social discrimination, culminating in their expulsion (1492/95). With nowhere to go, many sailed westwards for South America and the New World. Almost 400 years later, countless Jewish people from eastern and western Europe followed their example, fleeing Hitler Germany to seek refuge once more in the lands of gauchos and coffee plantations.
